Located at the crossroads of the county's two main corridors -- US 21 and NC 18 -- Sparta is the physical center as well as the focus of community life for Alleghany County. Like many southern towns, the Courthouse is the central feature surrounded by the old business district recalling the charm of the town's early history. Two shopping centers speak more to recent growth with a variety of local restaurants serving a variety of country cooking to fine cuisine.
Down town features numerous local antique and craft shops as well as Farmer's Hardware where you can find anything and everything year round. For the athletic individuals, Sparta is home to a brand new Wellness Center with heated indoor pools, sauna, and fitness gym. Enjoy a quick game of cards or a quiet reading at our Senior Center or public library.
Take it outside to one of the town's beautiful parks for an afternoon picnic or stroll along the greenway soaking up the fresh mountain air. For those of you looking for entertainment, stay up at night and enjoy the Alleghany Jubilee with Saturday night square dancing or kick up your heels and grab a bite to eat at the Silver Dollar Music Hall.
